Pastor's Corner For All The Saints
Three days from the time I am writing this we will be immersed in the celebration that comes on the last day of October—Halloween. The term Halloween, originally spelled Hallowe'en, is shortened from All Hallows' E’en, and e'en is a shortening of even, which is a shortening of evening. Hallow is the same word for "holy" that we find in the Lord's Prayer [“hallowed be thy name”]. Halloween, therefore, originally meant "All Hallows’ Eve." All Hallows’ Eve is called that because it is the day before All Saints Day (just as Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas). The night which appears to many to be the antithesis of what is holy and pure actually derives its name from the day which follows it, which is a celebration of God’s holy people. It is the evening before the day when we remember and give thanks for the saints who have died, but whose memory and heritage remains to bless us.
Because October 31 comes on a Saturday this year, All Saints Day will fall on a Sunday, and we can celebrate the day in our worship service. In many churches it is a tradition on the Sunday after (or on) All Saints Day to read the names of all the members of the congregation who have passed away in the last year, and although we have not done that here, I want on Sunday and in this space to remember the contribution that the “saints” in our lives have made. There are reminders of the saints all over our church building. There is a plaque in the hallway near my office which lists the names of men from this church who served in World War II. Elsewhere is another plaque which lists the names of those who helped with the construction of our Christian Education Building. Each month we receive interest income from endowments which have on them the names of the donors who have passed away. In my mind’s eye I can see many dear friends and faithful members who were sitting in pews when I was installed as your pastor but have since passed away. Their contributions and memories live on. I constantly hear someone talk about a Sunday school teacher or church leader who shaped their lives. When we observe the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, we come together not only with those who we can see around us, but with Christ, who is present at the table, and with all God’s saints, on earth and in heaven. We have communion with them, and with them we give thanks and praise to God.
As I think back on my life, I can remember with fondness the many Christian people whose faith and love touched my life. These are people who taught Sunday School, coached our church basketball team, led a missionary conference, wore Santa Claus suits and bounced children from the congregation on their knees. I invite you, too, to think of and give thanks to God for the saints who have brought goodness into your lives and into this congregation. Some will have faces you remember because they taught your Sunday school class. Others you may not even remember, but their willingness to take responsibility for doing other tasks in the church made it possible for there to be worship each Sunday, Bibles to read, teachers to teach you a place where you could hear the stories of Jesus.
You are the saints now, and one day long after you’re gone someone will remember the way that your love and faith made the love of God real to them. May God bless you as we pass from All Hallows’ Eve through All Saints Day to Advent, then Christmas and then the beginning of a new year.
